THE SECRETS OF OAK ISLAND, NOVA SCOTIA

iN 1795, an 18 year old man observed lights coming from the uninhabited island, and when he investigated, he discovered a circular depression in a clearing, and a tackle block hanging from a branch as if marking a place to dig. With the help of friends, the young man excavated thirty feet, discovering layers of “man made debris” every ten feet.

Since then, a legend has grown around the “money pit” and the hidden treasure  that is said to be buried at the bottom. Several expeditions have attempted to recover the treasure over the past two hundred years, digging as far as 180 feet, but not reached the bottom or discovered what treasure may be waiting for them at the bottom.

THE FEAR OF SNAKES

Ophidiophobia is the scientific terms for the unnatural fear of snakes. It is different than the more general herpetophobia, which is the fear of reptiles and amphibians. Many people who dislike snakes are not necessarily ophidiophobic, as true ophidiophobes not only fear live contact but also dread thoughts about snakes and cannot bring themselves to look at images of snakes on TV or movies. It is estimated that approximately 1/3 of adult humans have some measure of ophidiophobia, making it the most common reported phobia.

THE MYSTERY OF EDGAR ALLAN POE
Edgar Allan Poe was well known throughout his life for his poetry and prose, often pushing his works to the edge of the macabre, but it may the odd circumstances of his death  that helped cement his association with the dark side.
On the night of October 6, 1949, Poe was found wandering the streets of Baltimore “in great distress.. and in need of immediate assistance.” Poe never regained enough coherence to be able to explain the cause of his condition, but the use of drugs and alcohol have been widely dismissed by key eyewitnesses. Poe’s appearance was described as “repulsive”, with unkempt hair, a haggard unwashed face and “lusterless and vacant” eyes. His clothing did not fit well and was did not match Poe’s usual style, leading many to the widely accepted conclusion that he was wearing someone else’s clothes.
Many suspected causes of death have been suggested over the years — brain tumor, diabetes rabies, syphillis, epilepsy — but none explain why Poe was dressed in someone else’s clothing.

THE GRAVE OF LITTLE WENDY

Only four statues were created from the original mold, and one was purchased by a family to be placed at a grave in Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia. The family named in Little Wendy and it stood in relative obscurity until 1993, when it was used as the centerpiece photo for the successful book (and subsequent movie) Midnight In The Garden of Good And Evil. Based on the popularity of the statue, the family had it removed from the grave and donated to the Telfair Museum of Art

THE CURIOSITY OF FRANK LENTINI
At conception, Frank Lentini was one of a set of conjoined twins, but as they developed in the womb, the other twin died and his body was “assimilated” into Frank’s. Thus, when he was born in Sicily in 1881, Frank Lentini was born with three legs, two sets of genitals, and one rudimentary foot growing from the knew of his third leg. His parents refused to acknowledge him and was eventually given to a home for disabled children to be raised. At the home, met children who were deaf, blind and mute, and he learned to do amazing things despite his deformity: walking, ice skating, jump roping. At the age of 8, he moved to the United States and joined the  Ringling Brothers Circus as “The Great Lentini.” His career spanned over 30 years and he was so well respected amongst his peers that he was often referred to simply as “The King.” As an adult, Lentini’s legs grew to three different lengths, causing him to remark that even though he had three legs, he still didn’t have a pair.

THE CURIOSITY OF SCHLITZIE
Little is known about Schiltzie’s life prior to joining the circus, but he became a popular attraction in carnival sideshows in the 20’s and 30’s. Born with a condition called microcephaly (pejoratively known as “pinhead”) , he had an unusually small brain and small skull, and suffered from moderate to severe mental retardation, but he had an exuberant and sociable personality, and loved to sing, dance and be the center of attention, which made him a popular attraction. He even made appearances in a few movies. As was common amongst sideshows at the time, responsibility for his care passed from one carnival to another as shows traded attractions with each other, but by most accounts, Schiltzie was well cared for and treated throughout his performing years.

THE ODDITY OF THE HATCHETFISH

Deep below the surface, the hatchetfish live in the darkest corners of the oceans where man rarely sees. Their distitnctive camouflage is reminiscent of lost souls, trapped in the abyss of the underworld, bemoaning their eternal fate.

THE HORROR OF JACK THE RIPPER

Jack The Ripper was a serial killer who terrorized the Whitechapel area of London in 1888. Five gruesome murders are attributed to him, and several others may be as well, though it is not clear. All of Jack’s victims were prostitutes, and all were savagely stabbed and sliced in different ways. A few even had some organs removed, leading investigators to think that the assailant had some medical background. To this day, the identity of Jack the Ripper is still now known.

THE REALM OF THE BIZARRE: The LIzardman

Erik Sprague, known as the The LIzardman, is a performing artist and body modification enthusiast who estimates that he has spent hundreds of hours, and hundreds of thousands of dollars, to transform from human to reptile. He has had his entire body tattooed with green scales, had his tongue forked and had his teeth sharpened. Although he can sometimes be seen on TV and movies, he mainly earns a living as a professional sideshow act, plus doing stand up comedy and fronting his own band.

THE NIGHTMARE OF ‘FREAKS’ (1932)

Banned in the United Kingdom for over thirty years, Freaks was not well received by audiences and was the object of controversy for many years. Director Tod Browning chose to cast actual side-show performers, rather than using specialized costumes and makeup, Many of the scenes were cut from the film, chopping the film from 90 minutes to 64 minutes. Despite the cuts, one woman threatened to sue MGM, claiming the disturbing film caused her to miscarry her pregnancy.

THE ANOMALY OF THE MANCHESTER MUSEUM

At the Manchester Museum, there is an ancient Egyptian artifact that appears to rotate on its own. The obvious answer is that the vibration of daytime visitors is causing the 4000 year old statue to move, but skeptics charge that if there were enough vibration to move the statue, why don’t any of the other statues move? Check out what the museum’s surveillance camera was able to capture on film

THE GHOST OF FRANCES GRIMSHAW

Demolition workers in Cumbria, England photographed a derelict Victorian-era guest house, known as Meadowbank House, shortly before its destruction, but afterwards, when reviewing the photos, they spotted a ghostly image peering out one of the windows. David Grimshaw, a former resident of the property, identified the ghostly figure as that of his mother, Frances, who died a year earlier and may have returned to visit her favorite property before its demolition.

"That is my mother," Grimshaw said. "I’m totally convinced — no one else looks like that."

THE HAUNTING OF GAZIPUR

Thousands of workers at a garment factory in Gazipur, Bangladesh stopped working and began to riot earlier this week, smashing furniture and demanding that a ghost be removed from the building. The drama began when a female worker said she felt sick and attributed her condition to “an attack by a ghost” inside a toilet in the women’s washroom.
